Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started?
? Getting started is easy. The first step is to schedule an intro session. You can sign one of our current introductions that includes a uniform. Our intros are designed to help you learn about our dojo and the practice.

Can I really do Aikido?
? Yes. If you can walk up and down a flight of stairs, you can do Aikido. We teach beginners three basic techniques from which the art of Aikido is derived. Our approach helps you build a foundation so that you are ready to join our ongoing classes.

What if I am out of shape and uncoordinated?
? Compassion is at the heart of Aikido practice. At Aikido of Maine, we understand what it’s like to be a beginner. Everyone progresses at their own pace. Our approach allows you to learn at your own speed and take the next step only when you are ready.

How long will it take to learn Aikido?
? The time it takes to learn Aikido depends on how proficient you wish to become. After your very first class, you will know how to blend with an attack, perform a basic technique, and have taken a significant step toward physical fitness and mental clarity.

What are the membership fees?
? Our membership dues are $119 per month for unlimited practice,. Uniforms range from $45 to $75 We do not have contracts and do require a 30-day notice to modify a membership.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. An absolutely amazing place. Spacious and very well equiped. Learn martial arts and self-defense in a friendly, safe, and clean environment. Inspirational teachers. Built my strength, flexibility, balance, and confidence…though that barely scratches the surface of how training Aikido here has improved my life.

If you are thinking of starting or currently practice yoga, marital arts (including MMA, Judo, Jujitsu / BJJ, Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Muay Thai, Iaido, and others), Tai Chi, or dance for fitness or exercise like zumba or pole dancing, and even if you are just looking to learn or improve meditation, you should really try Aikido of Maine. It brings together the positive benefits of those activities into one. You can have fun, get a great workout, and improve your body and mind all at once.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Aikido of Maine is the premier dojo of Portland. I’ve known Gary sensei and Anya sensei for 30 years and i’m continually impressed by their dedication to the art and ongoing work to offer high-quality, international caliber training to their community.
