Pilates uses deep breathing and engaging deep abdominal muscles to move with greater ease and prevent injury. The program consists of exercises promoting good posture and correct movement, and challenging one to move from their center. ?Pilates exercises are like fundamentals of movement, building on each other, and becoming increasingly complex, while maintaining the principles of breathing, core control and balance of stability and mobility. ?Pilates practice builds strength and increases flexibility.

Practice of Pilates is designed for variety of people. ?It is helpful to those with some physical issues (such as lower back pain, postural difficulties etc.), for people who want to increase their level of fitness, as well as for athletes, who would like to work deeper on understanding movement, improving postural alignment and preventing injury. ?

These goals can be accomplished in group classes, where one can modify exercises to work on their goals. ?They could also be addressed by starting with individual lessons, to define one?s goals, and design a specific program.?

ANIA SMALL PhD – Stott Palates Trained instructor

?I got interested in Pilates a few years ago drawn by it?s beauty and methodology. ?As a psychologist and aikido teacher, I appreciated it?s mind-body philosophy and focus on breathing. ?I found Pilates methodology of learning how to move correctly to stay strong and flexible, while avoiding injury, very helpful, complimenting my aikido practice. ?In aikido, we focus moving from the center, while Pilates talks about strengthening one?s core, so I perceived some similarities between these two disciplines. ?Aikido adds to it partner practice, and bigger movement, while pilates focuses more on individual work out and smaller, controlled motions. ?I found the combination of both of these very helpful.”
