“My 9 year old son, Josh, loves Aikido of Maine’s summer camp! It was a great highlight of his summer! He really enjoyed getting to know the other kids and counselors. Practicing and learning more about Aikido in this summer camp setting boosted his self esteem and confidence. Josh also, enjoyed hiking on the Eastern Promenade, making masks and playing interesting and creative games.”
Cathy. We focus on The martial art of Aikido including swords and staffs! This is a fun, fast paced and rewarding program. We have students doing their first class and students with years of experience.

Bill Gleason sensei Seminar

October 5 -7 Gleason sensei was in Japan from 1970 to 1980 studying aikido with Yamaguchi Seigo Shihan. He also Gleason Sensei studied swordsmanship (kenjutsu) as well as Japanese language, classical music, and Eastern religion. Since 1985 Gleason Sensei has continued to practice and teach under the auspices of Mitsugi Saotome Shihan and the Aikido Schools of Ueshiba,

Over the last few years he has been doing a great deal of internal work and brings this to his seminars. He travels all over the us and abroad teaching and we are fortunate to have him visit Aikido of Maine.

Saturday childrens classes forming

Starting in February we will add two children’s classes. The first class will be from 10:45 to 11:30 and it is for children 6 to 10 years old. The second class will be from 11:35 to 12:30 and it “advanced” training for children who are green belt and above. Members are welcome to switch one of their week day classes to Saturday if they wish. Our goal is to enrich our offering and open some space for new members. Would you would like to alter your schedule with this offering.

Ikeda Sensei seminar

Early registrationThis will be Ikeda sensei’s 6th visit to our dojo. Save the date for what promises to be a wonderful weekend event! Aikido literally means “the way of harmony with energy.” Aikido’s founder, Morihei Ueshiba (O-Sensei) argued that martial arts must “cultivate a spirit of loving protection for all things.” The manifestation of this principle is “musubi,’ or blending with an aggressive intention or action, then neutralizing the conflict. In an Aikido class, students learn cooperatively, each practicing the role of thrower (nage) and thrown (uke). Narrow ideas of victory and defeat eventually dissolve. Hiroshi Ikeda has cultivated this spirit in his practice and seminars since he opened Boulder Aikikai, in 1980. His philosophy is to awaken and open the mind by honing the instrument of the body. Adult kyu tests

January 21 after morning class we will conduct our first kyu tests of the year! there is a good group getting ready. It should be a fun day at the dojo!
